Replace Airport Fleet

Measure

The County will reduce the consumption of fossil fuels in the County-owned vehicle fleet at the Sacramento International and Executive Airports.

The efforts for this measure have started.

Implementation

Convert the airport vehicle fleet to vehicles, trucks, and equipment powered by sustainable low-carbon fuels, electricity, fuel cells, and/or other technologies as they become financially feasible. Partner with Chief of Fleets and other agencies, including SacRT, to locate new fueling and EV charging stations at airports for multi-agency fleet use. This may include working to update the Sacramento Area Plug-In Electric Vehicle Collaborative’s Electric Vehicle Readiness and Infrastructure Plan (see Measure GHG-10).

Timeframe: Long term

GHG Reduction Potential: 713 MT CO2e per year by 2030

Sector: Vehicles - On-Road

Target Indicator: 15 zero-emission electric shuttle buses purchased by 2030.

Status of Implementation

The County Department of Airports has purchased 18 zero-emission electric shuttle buses and incorporated them into our existing fleet of compressed natural gas buses. These buses provide passenger transportation to the Airport Rental Car Facility and the Economy Parking Lot. To support these buses, a bus charging facility, with four 60 kilowatt (kW) and eight 120 kW chargers, has been designed and built next to the east solar facility and electrical vault. This facility will provide adequate charging infrastructure to support the full fleet conversion. When buses charge during the day, they can take advantage of renewable energy from the solar facility.
