Use Solar Power for County Buildings

Measure

The County will offset 100 percent of its building electricity use with renewable energy.

Started

The efforts for this measure have started.

Implementation

Install on-site renewable energy systems or participate in SMUD’s commercial SolarShares and/or Greenergy programs.

Timeframe: Near term

GHG Reduction Potential: None by 2030 because carbon-neutral electricity would be available from the grid. GHG reductions could be realized in advance of the 2030 CAP target date.

Sector: Building Energy

Target Indicator: 100 percent of County building electricity use procured from renewable sources by 2030.

Status of Implementation

The Department of General Services operates one rooftop solar site on County facilities and is investigating the development of more rooftop solar and parking lot solar systems at 17 additional County facilities. Additionally, the Sacramento County Airport System has installed a 7.9 megawatt solar facility and the County purchases Solarshares from SMUD that provide utility-side green energy from other offsite solar facilities.
