Conduct Landscape Irrigation Audit

The County will reduce excess water consumption associated with watering landscaped areas at County facilities.

Implementation

Conduct water audits to evaluate irrigation practices around County facilities. Identify all essential and non-essential turf, and remove non-essential turf by 2030. Modify irrigation practices and equipment accordingly for essential turf (e.g., timers, sprinkler heads). Consider changes in irrigation practices for dry years to ensure tree survival. Create drought-tolerant demonstration projects with interpretive signs at the three most visited County buildings to exhibit and promote native vegetation and high-efficiency irrigation techniques.

Status of Implementation

The green building policy referenced in Measure GOV-BE-01 will support conducting turf and landscape irrigation audits and the Department of General Services has completed an administrative draft Green Building Policy which is being peer reviewed by County departments. However, more work is needed to identify funding and responsible parties to conduct audits and benchmarking. County staff are exploring state and federal planning grant opportunities to support this measure.
